The Lightning Ridge Police Bush Safari is a registered charity that organizes an annual 10 to 13 day Safari into the Australian outback. The Safari is organized by Local Police and Community members, during the NSW school holidays (usually September/October), and its aim is to raise money for local charities whilst having fun.

The Safari has been operating since 1990 and has visited most areas of Western and Northern Queensland, South Australia, Western Victoria and the west of New South Wales. The Safari is not a race, it is a leisurely safari through the outback. We rarely do more than 500 kilometres per day, so there is plenty of time to look around. We camp as a group at a pre-selected location near amenities. We even have a couple of rest days at selected locations so you can have a rest or enjoy the local surrounds.

There are many activities happening during the evenings, including a ball, talent quests for adults and children, trivia competitions, fireworks, campfire nights and many more. There are plenty of opportunities for you to display your talents. On most nights we organise a local charity or organisation to cater for us, so there is no need to cook each night. Those meals vary from BBQ's to three course dinners, and we try to limit the cost to a maximum of $16.00 person.

Each morning we gather together for a daily briefing, so we can explain the days events. You are also issued with a detailed itinerary at the beginning of the Safari so you are never in any doubt as to what you are doing and where you are going.

The Safari is well prepared, with a reconnaissance trip done by some of the Committee before each Safari to fine tune the itinerary and organise camping and catering. The Safari is accompanied by a support team, including an Ambulance from the Ambulance Service of NSW, a Mechanical support team, and a State Emergency Service vehicle. You can be assured that you won't be alone if you get into trouble.

The Safari is a great adventure for families and couples unsure about going alone, but it is also just as great for people who like to travel with a large group. We get around 150 to 200 people coming each year from all walks of life, adding to a great atmosphere and a most enjoyable two weeks.
