1. Establish a public museum for the display and maintenance of the world’s premier gem opal and fossil collections recovered from opal fields in the Lightning Ridge region.
2. Promote public awareness of precious opal, Australia’s national gemstone, and Lightning Ridge the world’s only significant source of black opal, the rarest and most valued opal.
3. Educate the public about all aspects of opal mining processes, geology and fossil formation.
4. Document and preserve the unique multicultural history of the Lightning Ridge opal fields.
