The Aristocrat Black Opal Classic is a feature fours tournament which showcases the “cream” of Australian bowlers.
For four days, October 22 to 25, 32 teams representing most states of Australia will converge on the Black Opal Capital to compete for $35,000 prizemoney.
As rich as the purse that attracts these bowlers is the spinoff to the Lightning Ridge community.
Each year increased numbers of competitors and supporters give the local economy a great financial boost.
The Aristocrat Black Opal Classic was first competed in 1996, the brainchild of local bowler and Board Member, Kerry O’Brien.
Though unable to expand due to green restrictions the quality of competition has increased.
An additional $5000 bonus is offered jointly by St Johns Park and Lightning Ridge bowling clubs to the team that is able to capture the $35,000 purse at both prestigious venues.
Representative players from throughout Australia will be competing.
The success of this tournament is due largely to the overwhelming support of sponsors who have rallied to maintain this quality event.
Defending champions Peter Daly, John Dawson, Richard Shutt and Ross Maguire have returned hoping to secure the double.
Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club is geared up to host a successful and visually spectacular 2002 Aristocrat Black Opal Classic which will include entertainment and a sponsor’s dinner to complement their busy four day program.
