PUBLIC POOLS LATEST VICTIM OF OPPORTUNIST INSURANCE CLAIMS

Local swimmers cheer the opening of the 2001 Season

The magnitude of opportunist insurance claims cannot be fully comprehended until gradually we recognise that familiar events can no longer be staged, businesses increasingly have closed their doors, or more recently, the possibility of swimming pool closures is an issue to be contended with. On the first anniversary of the Twin Towers disaster its effect has been felt worldwide with sky-rocketing public liability premiums our constant reminder.

As the temperatures in Western NSW start to soar, the respite found in community swimming pools is now threatened.

Of the State’s 170 Councils, 100 have their pools leased to managers who must have adequate public liability cover before they can reopen.

Many who were able to secure cover 12 months ago no longer can.

Australian insurers are not offering cover and concern is being expressed about off-shore offers. If Councils are forced to manage their own facilities a number of options would need to be looked at including reduced hours and closures.

Spokesperson for Lightning Ridge Olympic Pool and Theme Park, Richard Mallouk, feels confident of gaining renewed cover when their policy expires in January.

“It will be at an increased rate,: he said, “but we have had to contend with these hikes from its initial $1600 to the current 20-odd thousand dollars being paid.”

The position at Collarenebri, Walgett Carinda and Burren Junction is not clear.

One thing that was made very clear by Steve Odri, Asset Manager Walgett Shire Council, is that managers contracts require them to produce their Public Liability cover.

No cover - no reopening.

“Any options to be considered will be tackled if and when they arise,” said Mr Odri.

With the swimming season set to recommence late September and early October, this issue is deserving of priority consideration by Walgett Shire Councillors and Management.

If this simple “luxury” is in any way threatened strong recommendations must be made to the State Government to enact befitting legislation to rid constituents and their families of the implications created by opportunist public liability claims.
