Council in brief

Drought Relief

A teleconference involving 13 Mayors was held to discuss the desperate circumstances western farmers are facing with the drought.

Subsidies are now available for:
*Transport of water for domestic purposes;
*Transport of fodder to feed drought affected stock;
*Transport of stock to slaughter;
*Transport of water for drought affected stock; and
*transport of stock to and from agistment.

Up to $5000 in any calendar year for subsidies to transport water for domestic purposes is available.

The Black Opal Advocate asked a Councillor to bring the matter of domestic water to miners in the Grawin/Glengarry/Sheepyard area before Council. Councillor Lane raised this matter. Council agreed to investigate the provision of a subsidy for 800 plus miners requiring water for domestic purposes.

Maintenance of Lightning Ridge town oval
Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club have relinquished their involvement with these ovals. Councillor Hewlett reminded Council of some of its history and where responsibilities lay.

When the extensions to the school were undertaken there were some sacrifices and agreements made with the Department of Education. The childrens’ park was one such sacrifice. This park was developed through community support and under the guidance of(Oxford) Terry Basford.

For the school to conduct its sporting program it was necessary to have an oval.
“The agreement was that the Education Department share the cost of maintaining the oval and offer an alternative park for children,” said Councillor Hewlett.
Council agreed that these matters should be followed up.

Special circumstances subsidies

Landholders are encouraged to return the surveys to the Rural Counsellor. Some areas of the Shire are more affected by drought than others. Overall a 60% response was required to initiate action.

Walgett Sub Division

Council endorsed a Development Application allowing a subdivision to proceed in accordance with the concept plan.

The subdivision which will comprise 50 blocks is adjacent to Walgett Aerodrome. Councillors inspected the development on the ground following their August meeting.
