Last week’s field sweep by the Department of Mineral Resources environmental and safety officers involved an inspection of 400 claims in 10 different localities.
This was the first of a number of surveys to be conducted in the Lightning Ridge Mining District.
Three hundred direction orders were issued to relevant claimholders.
“We wish to stress that no penalty notices have been issued. This is not a money-raising exercise, rather we consider it to be educational,” said Jenny Ward, Media person Department of Mineral Resources.
“The most frequent offence was the failure to rehabilitate shafts. Other offences detected were litter, rubbish and derelict cars, failure to control noxious weeds and failure to maintain marker tags and trenches,” said Ms Ward.
“Failure to follow the directives of the notices within a specified period would result in penalties being applied,” said Ms Ward.
