Korean film crew captures the Ridge

The spotlight was on Lightning Ridge throughout the 2002 Opal and Gem Expo and Opal Muster as Korean Broadcasting System, Nationwide, filmed many of the highlights.

Set to be broadcast on nationwide TV August 23 the film crew and producers will portray to viewers life in Australia for Korean families who have successfully relocated.

The exercise has taken the crew to various localities involving a variety of different industries.

Gold Coast-based Theresa and Glen Cho are one such family.

With a history in opal mining at Mintabie from 1986 to 1988 it was a natural progression for the couple to establish their two successful opal shops on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

“We want the world to know that opal brings good luck and good health,” said Theresa.

The crew had the opportunity to film different mining techniques and the unique lifestyle and social interaction that draws both visitors and long-term residents to the Ridge.

The buoyant Korean economy offers an excellent opportunity to showcase Australian opal and establish vital markets.

Overall the film will create a greater understanding of lifestyles and business opportunities portraying to Koreans a very “different” Australia to the one they may have visualised.
