The 2002 Opal Queen Competition marked the 32nd year of the quest. $15,000 in prizes were on offer to the entrants thanks to many generous sponsors.
Competing in this year’s event were, Jolana Voeks, Lauren Huntley, Madelynne Chua, Jenny Burke, Joanne Hackett, Dianne Stewart and Christine Callaghan.
2001 Micro Prince, Tyson Thompson, opened the evening by singing the National Anthem.
Forty visitors from Canberra attended the ball including a group from the Women in Racing.
Jolana Voeks was announced 2002 Opal Queen; second place Jenny Burke and third place Madelynne Chua by judges Edwina Laughtman (Secretary, Women in Racing), Neil McKenna (ACT Race Club member), and Ian McLean, CEO of Canberra Symphony Orchestra.
The 2002 Opal Queen Competition was sponsored by Sherman Opals, Walgett Shire Council, ACT Racing Club, Arthur Harris (Harlequin Opals), Countrylink, Joy Clayton (QB Opals), White’s Pharmacy, Mr Cheap and Bevan’s Opal and Cactus Nursery.
