At a meeting of the Opal and Fossil Centre committee held last week, the committee decided that they would continue efforts to obtain the preferred site for the centre located at Jack Murray Corner. This was following recent newspaper articles and after receiving advice from Department Land and Water Conservation.
The committee has written to the mayor asking him to make representations to the Premier on the committee’s behalf in helping to overcome problems with native title issues, and to investigate the possibilities of obtaining the land under public purpose legislation.
It was also decided that the building of an annex on an alternative site could be used as a temporary centre, until native title issues are resolved on the preferred site. This annex could then later be used as an education out reach centre of the main complex. This alternative is being investigated and a final decision will be taken in July as whether we will proceed along these lines or wait for the preferred site.
The committee discussed the recent appointment of a museum advisor for Walgett Shire Council after the council and committee successfully applied for dollar for dollar funding from NSW ministries of arts for this position. The person holding this position will assist in writing a business plan for the construction and operation of the centre and to acquire funding for the project.
