Local interest group meets councillors

Members of the Lightning Ridge Interest Group met with some of the local Shire Councillors to discuss next year’s Shire budget in regards to the order of priority being given to the various Council Projects relating to Lightning Ridge.

As the Budget is being finalised now, the Interest Group, which is part of the Rotary “community self-help project”, raised a number of issues.

Featured strongly was the sealing of the road to Cumborah to avoid more deaths, the Tourist Information Office being relocated and open seven days, the Tourist Promotions officer to generate badly needed tourist traffic, the upgrading of the bore baths combined with further development, the missing 370 metres of runway of the local airport which has been funded but not delivered, a central park, public toilets in the centre of town, a public fossicking area, perhaps combined with a mining display, located within walking distance from town and, in particular, the Opal and Fossil Museum which had been seen as the most imperative addition to the local infrastructure.

Mayor Peter Waterford explained the Shire’s position regarding the various points raised, while Councillor Bob Hewlett also assisted with his knowledge gained from his involvement with matters relating mining and camps on claims.

Former Mayor Ian Woodcock also helped with his usual balanced thinking, especially in regards to the more emotive points. We will be able to report back to our various groups with further information.
