The Lightning Ridge Ambulance Service of NSW this week paid tribute to the Police Bush Safari Committee who have given invaluable support to the centre over a period of 10 years.

“Local Ambulance Service funds are committed to day to day service, said Tim Collins, “so the support of the community to provide additional equipment is greatly appreciated.

Station Officer Dean Alchin took the opportunity to outline the equipment that had been purchased courtesy of the Bush Safari Committee and its application.

A television and video which will be used for viewing training videos and public presentations; and a training mannequin for simulated training for cardiac arrest situations and providing feedback to officers on the effectiveness of treatment.

The mannequin is also compatible with the Heartstart 3000, giving officers valuable training in detecting cardiac arrathmias.

An Optima Computer was received in July 2001. The computer allows staff internet access to NSW Ambulance Service documents and related medical websites.

Two glucometers (a machine used to test blood sugar levels) which supersedes older glucometers currently held in the station. The Prelson Glucometers enable officers to more rapidly assess a patient’s BSL.

This reduces the time taken for officers to intervene and provide for patients suffering a variety of conditions, particularly diabetic emergencies, therefore improving the overall outcome for the patient.

A soft pack Oxy Viva which is a basic piece of equipment in all ambulance vehicles. The donated Oxy Viva affords Lightning Ridge Station the flexibility of a specialised kit, fitted out for mines rescue, giving officers the advantage of being able to take bottled medical oxygen and resuscitation equipment to the patient.

Two pulse Oximeters which are used for acquiring the heart rate and level of oxygenation in the blood of a patient.

In addition to equipment, Lightning Ridge Station current has $5,000 for the future purchase of equipment, kindly donated by the Lightning Ridge Police Bush Safari.

“In addition we still have $5,000 in the kitty which we have earmarked towards the purchase of a defibrillator,’ said Station Officer Alchin.

“I would particularly like to thank Tim Collins for attending from Dubbo and commend the efforts of my predecessors, Peter Lang and Steve McMahon.

“The generosity of the Bush Safari Committee has allowed progressive Ambulance Staff Teams to work more effectively,” said Mr Alchin.

Responding on behalf of the SES, L.A.C. David Lane thanked the Ambulance Service for its ongoing support of the Police Bush Safari.
