“We are happy to announce that in excess of $500,000 is available to purchase and excise areas from landholders’ leases affected by the presence of Residential Mineral Claim dwellers,” said Peter Downes, Chairperson of the Working Party, last week.
An amount of approximately $600,000 has accumulated over a five year period from the collection of fees for Residential Mineral Claims.
These monies have been earmarked to offset the implementation costs involved with both stages of the scheme to “legitimise” camp dwellers, progressing to a final offer of a Western Lands Lease.
$90,000 has been expended on survey costs and the submission of plans. Further costs are expected.
Mr Downes said the completion of the survey and lodgement of plans were yet to be finalised.
“The Working Party recognised in the very early stages that it was unlikely there would be just one title at the completion of both stages.
“That choice will be with the Residential Mineral claimholder,” he said.
There is also an amount being held by Walgett Shire Council to add to this pool.
Acquisition of certain areas will ensure the smooth implementation of the overall scheme.
