It was a dramatic turnaround for the dynamic Junior Boys Relay team representing the Ridge and the northwest at the 43rd Annual Swimming Championships at the Sydney Aquatic Centre last week.
Patrick Small, Jordan Dowdle, Will Weeks and Cooper Scoles slashed their qualifying time of 2.58 (which placed them third to state) to 2.49 at Homebush placing them first in the northwest.
A total of 17 seconds was slashed from their 306 Barwon selection time.
It would take a further 20 seconds to topple the northwest record for the event, set in 1997.
Not only does the Junior relay hold the coveted first placing in the northwest, so too does nine-year-old Patrick Small in his Freestyle event. Patrick also achieved his personal best at Homebush.
Being able to train year round is the key to their success or any Ridge swimmer who has the Nationals in their sight.
Carly Kennedy, who performed splendidly in Butterfly and Backstroke at Homebush has set herself the goal of becoming the first indigenous swimmer to represent the Ridge at the Nationals.
Needing just that final injection of funding and community support, the completed indoor heated pool and diving complex will give these very talented swimmers the opportunity they deserve to achieve their goals.
