“Telstra has been announced as the successful tenderer to ensure all towns with a population of more than 500 have mobile coverage, as part of the Federal Government’s response to the Telecommunications Service Enquiry,” said the Hon John Anderson, Friday, April 5.

The launch of the Burren Junction and Rowena Base Station demonstrated Telstra Countrywide’s commitment to the area.

Held on the Harris Family property “Moomin”, Telstra Group Managing Director, Doug Campbell, Area General Manager Ian Peters and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services the Hon John Anderson, launched the new facility.

Walgett Shire Council was praised for its vision in recognising the opportunity provided by the Networking the Nation initiative to improve mobile communications throughout the region.

It was an excellent example of how Telstra Country-wide had worked with the Rowena and Burren Junction communities to improve telecommunications in rural and regional Australia.

“The mobile phone coverage for towns over 500 initiative, together with funding for mobile phone coverage projects under the Networking the Nation program, is providing communities across regional Australia with the ability to compete more effectively, with larger centres for business,” said Mr Anderson.

“The rollout of the services is due to commence in April 2002 and coverage in the first town is expected to be available in June 2002. All 132 towns are scheduled to receive services by December 2003,” said Senator Richard Alston, Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.

Mayor Peter Waterford, Deputy Mayor Prue Hutchinson and Group Manager Service Management, Joe Woolridge represented the Shire.
