OPB 116 TO BE RE-OPENED

The Lightning Ridge Mining Board at their meeting last week agreed to rescind part of a policy reserve between Fantasia Street and the airport. The LRMA has been lobbying Walgett Shire Council for over three years to open this area up. The Shire had the area reserved from mining to cater for any future expansion of the town. 46ha has been put aside directly behind Fantasia Street for expansion of the town and no prospecting or mining will be permitted in this area.
The balance of the area will be opened up once again for prospecting and mining. Part of the area is not available for residential development as it is too near the airport and another part on the eastern side is not suitable because of drainage issues. In these areas the rehabilitation standards will be the same as they are for the preserved fields. The area directly behind Fantasia Street will be available for future residential expansion and therefore this area will need to be rehabilitated to the same standards as on the new fields.
Persistence does pay off in the end. The Department will give notice prior to the releasing of OPB 116.

LRMB APPROVES ROAD LEVY INCREASE

The Lightning Ridge Mining Board approved the LRMA and GGSMA’s request to increase the road levy to $25 per claim. Miners have been asking for mining tracks to be graded more often for many years to save wear and tear on their vehicles. The only way this can be done is to increase the levy. It does not help when people drive on the tracks when wet particularly after they have just been graded.
The levy will be increased as at 1 January 2010. The pro rata system will continue meaning that the levy collected for each mining area will be the amount that will be spent in that area.

We have sought some assistance from the Walgett Shire Council and Department of Lands to see if they would be willing to contribute money to the road fund for maintaining the main access tracks in the areas around town. Now that the majority of camp owners have converted their mineral claims to western lands leases they are no longer contributing to the road fund. To date we have not been successful. Therefore the tracks we have been maintaining on the areas around town may not be graded as often as only people with mineral claims are contributing to the road levy. Western Lands Leaseholders or anyone can get together and simply pay the LRMA to grade their track. Feel free to come to the office for a quote.

MINISTER CANCELS VISIT

Minister for Primary Industries, The Hon Ian Macdonald cancels his visit to Lightning Ridge. Minister Macdonald was due to visit Lightning Ridge on Thursday 20 August 2009. His itinerary included lunch with the Lightning Ridge Mining Board, the unveiling of plaques at the 3 Mile Open Cut, a meeting with the farmers and a meeting with the miners. The LRMA had been inviting the Minister to visit Lightning Ridge for many years and we are disappointed he is unable to see our industry and town first hand.

Nevertheless the quarterly meeting of the Lightning Ridge Mining Board will go ahead as usual. The main issue on the agenda will probably be compensation. The LRMA and GGSMA as yet have had no response from the farmers to our offer of 24 June to increase compensation to $40 per claim which we believe will pay money’s owed to the Department of Lands for the Permissive Occupancy, Sims Hill and the GGSMA paddock and be sufficient to keep the scheme going for the next five years.
