REHABILITATION

Rehabilitation will be the focus of the LRMA in the coming months. Over the past few years the industry has been concentrating on raising safety standards on the fields and although ongoing, the major elements have mainly been achieved. The safety culture of the industry has definitely improved.

The next step will be to raise awareness and educate the industry on
improving rehabilitation standards. This process has already commenced with the Department implementing environmental field sweeps over the past year. The majority of miners are leaving their mineral claims in an satisfactory condition on completion of their mining operations.

The LRMA and GGSMA met a couple of weeks ago to discuss the rehabilitation of whole fields once mining has diminished and the cost of this stage 2 rehabilitation will be covered by the recently introduced environmental levy. We are in the process of developing a proposal for consideration and we will probably present this to our members sometime in April, prior to discussing it with the Department.

DEPARTMENT TO INTRODUCE FINES

The Department of Primary Industries, Mine Safety have advised us that certain staff at the Lightning Ridge office have been designated to issue Penalty Infringement (on the spot fines) for claim holders who fail to comply with certain claim conditions.

They can issue on the spot fines for such things as mark out, keeping more than one dog, not disposing of tailings correctly, untidy claim, erection of unauthorised structures and unsafe operations. Penalties range from $550 to $5,500.

4th NATIONAL OPAL SYMPOSIUM 2005

Planning for the 4th National Opal Symposium to be held in Lightning Ridge on 26 & 27 July 2005 is well underway. The organising Committee - Danny Hatcher, Anthony Melonas, David Howell and Maxine O'Brien have put together an exciting draft program and lined up most of the speakers and we are looking for sponsors.

As well as the usual scientific presentation we will also be having
presentations from miners on the most efficient methods of extracting dirt.
So we can see some pretty interesting discussions happening at the Symposium between the super hoist, bogger enthusiasts and the blower, digger advocates.

Information will be mailed out to members in the next month and we are
hoping to attract opal miners from all across the country. We will be
calling on local miners to assist with billeting some of the interstate
miners so if you can accommodate anyone, please let the LRMA office know.

BRAND IMAGE FOR OPAL

A sub-committee of the National Opal Miners Association met earlier this year to discuss an overall image and selling line for opal and to put
together a promotional plan. This is progressing well and we will be
launching the concept at the National Opal Symposium. It is very exciting and we believe we are onto a winner. The image and selling line are featured on promotional material for the Opal Festival week and we will be using it for the Symposium promotional material so keep a look out for it.
