MEMBERS MEETING 16 APRIL 2005

A quick reminder that the LRMA are holding a general meeting at 10am in the Bowling Club on Saturday 16 April 2005. The Board of Directors wish to discuss strategies for rehabilitation with its members prior to putting forward a proposal to the Department of Primary Industries, Mineral Resources.

WASTE DUMPS

The centralisation of waste mullock, a couple of decades ago, was a great initiative towards improving rehabilitation standards on mineral claims in the new fields. This system still works extremely well in the vast majority of areas but as all are aware there is an issue with noodlers on the Mulga dumps. In case there was some confusion in last week's paper the LRMA does not advocate anyone dumping waste material in the bush, no matter what the circumstances. Rehabilitation standards have risen over the years and the standards and responsibility of miners will continue to rise.

VALE BRIAN MORRIS

Brian Morris, who was the LRMA's legal advisor for many, many years sadly passed away last Monday night. Brian will be remembered by the numerous opal miners he represented and gave advice to and particularly by the LRMA past and present Boards from the 1980s to 2000. He was instrumental in assisting the various Boards in strategic planning particularly in relation to legal matters and opal mining legislation. During the 1990s he was the LRMA's legal representative in the Warden's Inquiry into the Hasmay mining leases and played a major role in assisting the industry's exemption from the Native Title process. He was a passionate advocate of the opal mining industry and will be sorely missed.

MEMBERS MEETING 16 APRIL 2005

The LRMA are holding a general meeting at 10am in the Bowling Club on
Saturday 16 April 2005. The Board of Directors wish to discuss strategies for rehabilitation with its members prior to putting forward a proposal to the Department of Primary Industries, Mineral Resources.

Rehabilitation will be the focus of the industry over the coming years and it is vital that we raise awareness in this regard as we have done with safety over the past decade. We are now in a position to rehabilitate areas where mining has finished due to the introduction of the environmental levy in January this year. We also need to negotiate with the Department a pragmatic environmental regime for prospecting and mining in Opal Prospecting Area 4.

The Board encourages all members to attend this special meeting on Saturday week.

EXCITING NEW FASHION RANGE

Top Australian designer Charlie Brown will be launching a new fashion range based on opal in May this year. The fashion launch will also include contemporary opal jewellery organised by the Opal Sector of the Jewellers Association of Australia.

The launch of this opal fashion line will feature a top international
supermodel and promises to raise the awareness of opal both domestically and internationally.
