HUDSON PEAR PROGRAM ON AGAIN

The weather has cooled down and volunteers are out spraying Hudson Pear (cylindropuntia rosea) around the town again with funding from the Natural Heritage Trust's Envirofund.

Work for the Dole through JobLink Plus in Moree are starting a six month program of spraying next week and we should see some major benefits in another month or two. The LRMA has advertised for a supervisor and we should have one chosen by the end of this week.

Volunteers have also been letting the LRMA office know where infestations are occurring and this will make our life much easier to identify the priority areas to spray.

If you can assist with this weed control program in anyway, such as spraying around your local area or letting us know where any plants are, please contact the LRMA office.

MEMBERS ENDORSE REHABILIATION PROPOSAL

Members at a General Meeting last Saturday, unanimously endorsed a proposal to allow the LRMA Board to negotiate a scheme with government that will allow the LRMA to underwrite the rehabilitation responsibilities of members who wish to participate.

The LRMA Board believes and its members agreed that this will be the first step in changing and promoting a rehabilitation culture that will lead to a higher awareness and environmental responsibility and allow a smooth transition to Opal Prospecting Area 4.

One area of concern for the Board and members was the size of mineral claims in OPA 4 as neither wish to see any increase in the size. Another discussion point was the rehabilitation levy as the Board wanted to keep this levy to a reasonable amount but at present it is being used to maintain waste dumps and is at risk of rising. One solution may be charging an extra levy for waste dumps on a user pay basis.

The Board will present their proposal to the Department of Primary
Industries, Mineral Resources in early May and report the results back to its members.
