AUSTRALIAN OPAL EXHIBITION
The Australian Opal Exhibition is on this coming Thursday, Friday and
Saturday at the Gold Coast International. The LRMA will be sharing a booth with the Queensland Opal Miners Association and Queensland Boulder Opal Association. We will be selling the various opal promotional items we have. We will also be meeting with the other miners associations that are attending to discuss and hopefully sign off on a Memorandum of Understanding to form a national opal miners' association. The aims of the national opal miners' association will be to oversee the National Opal Symposium, generically promote opal, encourage research into opal and lobby on issues that affect all opal miners.
DRAFT REVIEW OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
We have finally received part of the draft Review of Environmental Factors, prepared on behalf of the Department of Primary Industries (the Department of Mineral Resources is now a part of this new super Department) on Opal Mining Within the Narran-Warrambool Reserve, Lightning Ridge.
There is a lot of misleading and inaccurate information in the Draft and we will be hoping to get these misperceptions corrected.
Overall the Review and the recommendations are detrimental to the opal industry. We believe this is primarily because this was mainly a deskstop study with very little on the ground research and many of the
recommendations are based on incorrect information. The Board of the LRMA will be working extremely hard on their response to the draft over the coming weeks.
