PATICE REY PRESENTS “THE FORMATION OF AUSTRALIAN OPAL: THE TALE OF SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY”

Associate Professor Patrice F. Rey from The University of Sydney’s EarthByte Research Group in the School of Geosciences will be giving a scientific presentation on the formation of Australian Opal.

The presentation will be held at the Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club at 6.00pm sharp on Saturday 31 January 2015.

Patrice has been researching the formation of opal for over a decade and has visited Lighting Ridge and other opal fields of Australia on numerous occasions as well as presenting at many National Opal Symposiums.

Miners and anyone interested in opal will find this presentation very interesting and informative and Patrice always stimulates some lively debate – so don’t miss out.

NEW COMPENSATION AND LEVY REGIME COMMENCES
The Division of Resources and Energy has commenced collecting landholder compensation on the grant and renewal of mining titles as of 1 January 2015. The compensation amount is $100 per mineral claim and $100 plus 10c per hectare as set by the Minister. The amount will be indexed annually to CPI and reviewed in five years time.

Miners’ infrastructure levies have also been reinstated as of 1 January 2015. The road levy is $25 per claim, rehabilitation stockpile levy $10 per claim and the environmental levy $10 per mineral claim. It will take some time for the road fund to build up to enable us to maintain mining roads so please be patient. It has not been a major issue for some time as there has been no rain and therefore not enough moisture to grade. Hopefully by the time there is enough money to grade the rainfall pattern will be back to normal.
